Formed in Boise, Idaho, in 1992, Built to Spill has steadily made its presence known in the Northwest indie music industry. The band’s sound combines moody, ambient tracks with witty, culturally influenced lyrics. Built to Spill plays the Viking Union Wednesday.

The band’s frontman, Doug Martsch, has been the one constant member, which began with Brett Netson on bass and guitar and Ralf Youtz on drums. After releasing the album “Ultimate Alternative Waivers” in 1993, the band shifted to Martsch with Brett Nelson on bass and guitar with Andy Capps on drums. The band released the acclaimed “There’s Nothing Wrong with Love” in 1994, accompanied by cellist John McMahon.

After a little rearranging, the band released “Perfect from Now On” in 1997 with a newly configured band. In 1999, the band released “Keep It like a Secret,” and its popularity became obvious when the album become Built to Spill’s first to reach the pop charts. “Ancient Melodies of the Future,” the band’s next release in 2001, was a perfect follow-up to its previous album.

The band’s most recent release, “You in Reverse” (2006), shows its evolved sound from years of making music and the collaborative effort of having regular band members.
