The number of strings and members might be changing, but the music is as wild as ever. Aaron Guest of The Crock Pot Five — formerly the 20-, 27-, and 30-something String Band — talked to The Herald about rocking Bellingham with bluegrass.

Q: How did the band come together?

A: I moved in with my buddy Wyatt Winston this year and formed the 20-String Band. I play 12-string guitar and he plays mandolin. We played lots of open mics around town.

Q: It seems the band is growing. Tell me about the new members.

A: Mike Preuss plays the dobro. It’s actually a steel guitar; you play it on your lap with a slide. Richard Reeves plays a genuine washtub bass. Coty Hogue, she plays banjo, and we all sing and all lead different songs. There’s lots of old folk and bluegrass covers, as well as some originals.

Q: How would you describe your music?

A: Footstompin’, fun and easy to drink to. That’s probably it. Definitely lots of folk and bluegrass and some dirty old blues thrown in there. We do have a blast.

Q: What do you see as the band’s future?

A: I want to rock Bellingham as much as we can because people love bluegrass here. All of us have different bands and solo musical groups as well. It’s definitely a collaboration. For now, this is our “have a good time” band. If we can get more original material, we’d definitely go to the studio and make an album.
