Self-taught local acoustic singer/songwriter Shawnee Kilgore started playing the guitar more than 10 years ago. From a little town in Maine, Kilgore moved to Bellingham when she was 5 years old, and she said she feels the area has a lot to offer musically.

“I think as a whole Bellingham has a great live pulsing music scene with so much creativity, and the people are so supportive,” Kilgore said, “…which helps keep me motivated to have music to share.”

Kilgore started performing her music only a few years ago but has since played for many. She played for a crowd of nearly 1,000 people at her first festival performance at the Sound Off Summer Music Festival in Simsbury, Conn., last summer.

Kilgore said her main passion about writing songs is being able to express herself through music.

“I’m not very verbally articulate,” Kilgore said. “For that, if I wasn’t able to articulate myself through song, I would have exploded a long time ago and ostracized myself from everyone I know and love.”

Kilgore’s first release, “This Mighty World,” came out in early 2007 and was recorded in Glastonbury, Conn. She said she hopes to record another album soon but isn’t sure when.

Kilgore also has recorded music for the soundtrack of a friend’s film, “The Curse of Blanchard Hill.” The slasher movie is screening at the Mount Baker Theatre on Friday. The movie will start at 7:30 p.m. with tickets for $6.

Kilgore is performing at the Green Frog Cafe Acoustic Tavern on Monday with Memes and Kat the Unsinkable. The 21-and-older show starts at 9:30 p.m. with no cover.
